The Skin and Wrinkles
To be able to understand Botox and filler treatments, one needs to understand the skin and wrinkles. The skin has many layers but is divided into three parts; the epidermis (outer layer), the dermis, (middle layer that contains the blood vessels and oil glands), and the inner layer under the dermis (subcutaneous layer) that contains fats and blood vessels.
Each layer has connective tissue with elastin fibres that gives the skin’s elasticity and collagen that provides the support to the cells. When the skin aging, the collagen and elastin fibres lose strength and elasticity, and therefore the skin appears to sag. The blood vessels in the dermis also become more fragile and that is why older people bruise easily. The gland that secretes oil, the sebaceous glands, function decreases and the as result, less oil is secreted that aid in the moisture levels of the skin. If the skin in moist, it will not show fine lines. As soon as it is dehydrated, it will shrink, become thin, dry and wrinkles will appear. It can also be itchy and flaky at times.
These are the types of wrinkles that appear when resting. Sleeping positions might cause you wrinkles due to the position you are sleeping in each night. These are called sleep lines. Sleep lines occurs when you remain in the same position with your face at night.
These types of wrinkles and lines are created when you move your face. When we make an expression, the muscles under the skin are used and a groove under the skin is formed, hence the words “facial expression”.
The aging process is irreversible, but with filler and Botox, the tissue can be supported and ageing can be controlled, in a manner of speaking
What is Botox?
Botox treatments are used by doctors to help turn back the clock in order to eliminate wrinkles, but it is also used as a medical aid. Botox is a trade name for Botulinum Toxin, a protein and neurotoxin that, when injected, relaxes the facial muscles.
What makes Botox treatments so popular is that it is a non-surgical and simple procedure that has to be administrated by a physician and will help smooth out frown lines, moderated to severe, between the brows. This procedure will last for five to six months and the results speak for themselves.
Botox treatments are used for aesthetical purposes to treat wrinkles on the forehead, outside of the eyes and frown lines. Botox is generally combined with Botox filler treatments as well. Botox is used in the upper one-third of the face and fillers the rest (the lower two-thirds) of the face.
Botox is also used in dental treatments; if a patient grinds their teeth excessively the jaw muscle tends to become stiff. Botox is injected to relax the jaw muscle.
Hyaluronic acid fillers are used when people have lost volume in areas of their face, especially in the mid and lower parts. Fillers work a bit different than Botox. Botox relaxes the muscle found under the wrinkle, but fillers fill the line, area or crease with a substance. Hyaluronic acid retains water, and this hydrates and volumises the skin. This results in the troubled area disappearing instantly.
However, Botox filler treatments are also used to add volume, creating a plump or lifting effect. It is usually used in lifting the cheek area, the temples, and the jawline. Ladies with thin lip are now able to have plump lips when a filler is used and if you are recognising that your hands are ageing and the skin on you hand is losing elasticity, you can plump up the skin of the hand with fillers as well.
The treatment is fast and the results can last up to several months, or even up to one to two years if you are fortunate. Research has shown that when a person receives filler injections repeatedly, the body’s own natural collagen production will increase, that will also help with the elimination of fine line and wrinkles. Some studies indicate that the then fillers are injected over a prolonged period; less product is used but still achieving the same look.
The Side Effects
There is a downside to fillers. People might have allergic reactions to these fillers and sometimes, tiny bumps forms under the skin. In most cases, the bumps go away. The other cases, a bluish discoloration of the skin happens that can last for several months. This is known as Tyndall, but, fortunately, this does not have to become an obstacle and treatment is available.
It is very important that when you are considering filler treatments, you need to see a physician that is qualified to do the treatments. The reason? There are several different types of wrinkle fillers and the correct one has to be used for the wrinkle that is being treated. Otherwise, it will have no effect and ultimately, you are going to waste money.
- This is why derma fillers are so popular:
- It enhances the volume of the skin
- Minimises wrinkles
- Augmentation of cheeks, lips and chin
- Promotes the production of collagen
- Aid in the restoration of facial contours when shown in 3-dimentional
These are the areas the can be treated with fillers:
- Lines in the corner of the nose and corner of the mouth (Naso-labial folds)
- Wrinkles around the lip area (Peri-oral area)
- The outer corners of the mouth to the jawline (Marionette lines)
